Friends of Merrymeeting Bay’s (FOMB) second presentation of our 30th annual Winter Speaker Series: Strata: Stories from Deep Time features Laura Poppick, award-winning author and science and environmental journalist. Winter Speaker Series presentations are held via Zoom and accessible via hyperlink at the top of the FOMB web page: www.fomb.org. This event takes place Wednesday, November 11th at 7 pm.

Grappling with the environmental crises gripping Earth today, we can look to deep geologic history of our planet to learn how Earth regained stability during past periods of upheaval. Join local journalist Laura Poppick for a discussion about the ancient stories we can read in Earth's geologic record, and the wisdom that those stories hold for our future. She will discuss her debut book, Strata: Stories from Deep Time, which delves into four transformative moments of change in deep time that made our lives here possible today.

Laura Poppick is a science and environmental journalist based in Portland, Maine. Her stories have appeared in the New York Times, Scientific American, Wired, Audubon, National Geographic, Smithsonian and elsewhere. Strata, her debut book, has been shortlisted for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Maine Literary Award for Nonfiction.

FOMB hosts our Winter Speaker Series October-May, on the second Wednesday of each month. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and ability for participants to attend from out of the area, the series continues via Zoom.
Speaker Series presentations are free, open to the public. FOMB’s December 9th program, Data Centers & EMF’s: The Invisible Costs, features Theodora Scarato, Director of Wireless and EMF Programs at Environment Health Sciences.
