Mushroom Walk

Sunday, September 21st, 2:00 pm - 4:00pm
Bowdoinham, ME

Join Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) as we conclude our Outside! 2014 series with a Mushroom Walk on Sunday, September 21st from 2:00-4:00pm. This free, all-ages event is open to the public and families are encouraged to attend.

The Maine woods are a veritable goldmine for wild mushrooms, the fruiting bodies of our native fungi. New England’s weather conditions create excellent habitat for spore-bearing organisms, many of which are easy to identify. Some species are edible and some contain a multitude of medicinal qualities. With only 5% of the world’s 1.5 million estimated fungi species identified, there is much to be explored in the world of mushrooms.

Local mycologist Michaeline Mulvey will lead an expedition into the uplands of Bowdoinham to educate participants on local varieties. Participants will meet in Bowdoinham (detailed directions will be given upon registration) and are encouraged to weargood walking shoes. Attendees should bring drinking water, a collection basket, and a knife and are welcome to bring mushrooms from home for show and tell or for help with identification.

Pre-registration is required with Dup Crosson at 666-1118.

You can share the event on Facebook here.

Our winter Speaker Series begins its 18th year in October with lectures, readings, and family-friendly educational events through May. The season’s first event is “Question 1: A Panel Discussion on Bear Hunting” on October 8th at Bath City Hall, featuring Daryl DeJoy from Wildlife Alliance of Maine and Judy Camuso from Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
