Outside 2014
Cathance River Paddle

Led by Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) guide Michelle Moody
Sunday, June 22nd, 9:00am-1:00pm
Philip Mailly Waterfront Park, Bowdoinham, ME

Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) continues its Outside! 2014 series with a Cathance River paddle trip on June 22nd at 9:00am. This is a fantastic opportunity for intermediate to advanced paddlers of all ages to explore one of Merrymeeting Bay’s smaller tributaries. This event is free and open to the public.

The upper tidal section of the Cathance is quiet, remote, and known for its abundance of wildlife, including ospreys, snapping turtles, beaver, and eagles. Through events like this, FOMB exposes community members to these diverse creatures firsthand while educating participants about local fragile and threatened wildlife habitat.  Paddlers will pass through mostly wooded and vegetated terrain for the duration of the nine-mile round trip excursion, and will be treated to an excellent view of the head of tide falls.

Led by Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) guide Michelle Moody, the group will meet at the Philip Mailly Waterfront Park in Bowdoinham and proceed upriver to head of tide in Topsham and back with a break for lunch. Intermediate to advanced paddling skills are necessary. Paddlers must provide their own boat and lifejacket.

This FOMB co-sponsored event is the second of two AMC Cathance River-themed paddles taking place June 20th and 22nd.

Pre-registration is required with Michelle Moody at 319-7355.

Next in the FOMB Outside! 2014 series will be a two week archaeology dig at Thwings Pt. in Woolwich. The dig runs July 7-18 on weekdays with morning and afternoon slots available for volunteers to participate. Please contact Sarah Cowperthwaite at 449-1450 to pre-register.
